Powell’s Books is currently handling their Holiday marketing in a manner that really only they could pull off.

The marquee under their logo reads “Gifts from $1 to $35,000.” Those who know me know that I detest the over-commercialization of Christmas, and the Holiday season in general, and since the marketing blitz starts earlier each year (before Halloween even this time; come on, really?), it’s a problem that is clearly not going away. There is irony to this, of course, being that I am not at all what most people would call religious, but I do think there is a certain spirit of the season that gets overlooked by far too many people.

So, in a time where people are less than mindful of the reason for the season, and the focus of most (especially in the advertising world) is on selling product more than any other time of the year, there is something refreshing about the simple honesty of the marquee pictured above. It makes no attempt to disguise that it’s trying to sell something to you, but simultaneously it manages to acknowledge that the importance lies in the meaning behind a gift rather than its price tag.

It shouldn’t matter what you spend, on either end of the spectrum, so long as what you’re buying is a symbol for how you feel rather than a substitute for consideration. Bravo, Powell’s.

Side note 1: (I realize the picture here is of poor quality. I will update it with a better one next week).

Side note 2: I realize I may very well have been the victim of genius grade marketing trickery, but considering the source I doubt this to be the case. Also I’m a romantic in the worst way so I refuse to believe this isn’t genuine.

Saw the new 007 flick, Quantum of Solace last night. Aside from the hordes of morons also in the audience (I wish I were exaggerating), it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The reviews pinning it as mediocre are pretty inaccurate, I would say. It packs plenty of action, the pacing is quick, and Daniel Craig delivers another strong performance, lending further credence to the growing notion that his iteration is the definitive James Bond.

Of much interest to me, of course, were the opening titles, created by MK12. I’m still undecided as to whether I prefer them over Casino Royale’s or not. They are both thematically well tied to their respective films, though I feel Casino Royale’s sequence is filled more with lots of fun, exciting little moments, while Quantum’s titles provide a cohesive, unified experience. Different solutions for a similar problem, I suppose. I’ll let you compare them for yourself after the break.

One thing that is certain is that Quantum’s title sequence has MK12’s style all over it; there’s no mistaking their work, and something about the way it was cut together reminds me very much of there History of America project from last year. I must say I loved the typography in the title sequence thoroughly, both in terms of the face itself and the way in which it was animated. Bravo on that. I’m still undecided about the use of typography for the location introductions through the rest of the movie. If nothing else, I enjoyed that they tried something different, even if it was only successful a third of the time.

Design and typography aside, Quantum of Solace is a worthy successor to Casino Royale, and is most definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Go see it this weekend. Do it.

UPDATE:

I did some research and discovered that the title sequence designer on Casino Royale (and all of the previous Bond flicks leading up to this one since GoldenEye) is a man named Daniel Kleinman, a British TV Commercial and Music Video director. Interesting that the decision was finally made to hand the opening title duties over to a motion-graphics firm, and one in the U.S., no?

Would you believe me if I told you what you see in front of you is not some sort of blatant knockoff, but in fact a new, highly specialized McDonald’s store? What if I told you it was located in Japan? I thought so.

McDonald’s seems to have launched a new brand initiative in the land of the rising sun which strips away all of the familiar McDonald’s iconography (e.g. the Golden Arches, Ronald McDonald (and posse), any instance of the color yellow) in favor of stark red and black fields of color with large, clean sans serif type. It’s as though we are bearing witness to the illegitimate child of McDonald’s and The Sharper Image (God rest its soul). Hit the jump for the breakdown of this strange and interesting new idea.

Instead of building on one of the most widely recognized brands in the world, this new move seeks to scale back and distill the branding message down to the bare essentials, spawning a new sub-brand entity that can mostly operate on its own yet still relies on its parent for support and recognition. The new aptly named Quarter Pounder stores exist solely to peddle a single product, in two forms: The Quarter Pounder Meal, and The Double Quarter Pounder Meal. It introduces convenience via a minimum of choice (at least, in theory), and I expect streamlines the process of acquiring your monthly dose of cholesterol in a single sitting. Of course, the burning question is, will it work?

In some cases, I can see how this might be an indecisive person’s own personal hell, but I think that in general the idea is a sound one. I’m not completely sold on the execution; I feel that if they were going to go for a striking sans serif, they should have gone with something bolder or more condensed, instead of this awkward middle weight. (The only type treatment that seems to work correctly is that which the world “double” is set in).

The color scheme feels a bit more dark and foreboding than it ought to be; having just watched V for Vendetta this week, I am immediately lead to see this as the government sanctioned burger joint of an Orwellian regime. Also the red feels a smidge to dull for my liking. The overall connotation I get from this is “COME ENJOY QUARTERPOUNDER; THE DOUBLEPLUSGOOD CHOICE OF THE PARTY.” All these things need is a gigantic Big Brother poster (the character/leader, not the television show, you philistines) on the inside and maybe some fancy listening posts for the thought police and we’re good to go.

Ok, so perhaps that’s a bit of a stretch. But I do think that something about it is a wee bit off. The idea behind it though, is a good one. The Quarter Pounder is already a household name in burgers (much as it pains me to say so), so it makes a lot of sense to capitalize on the untapped potential for leaning on the Quarter Pounder brand as a means to drive more sales (as if McDonald’s needed it). And, given the culture of megacities like Tokyo and its hordes of Sararīmen, teenage consumers and people in general, where efficiency is a way of life, I think this could actually be fairly successful.

It’s made the fast and easy dining option even faster and easier, and in an environment where consumers are inundated with incessant input, the stark, easily identifiable (albeit garish) Quarter Pounder shops will likely serve as a beacon to all those in search of a no familiar, no fuss foray into lunchland. Whether this will turn out to be a case study on “Mega Branding No-Nos” or “How to Properly Sub-Brand Your Brand” remains to be seen.

Thanks to Josiah for bringing this to my attention.

Not one to settle for using other people’s images when I feel I’m well capable of creating my own, I took my camera out for a walk around the neighborhood and came back with what I feel are some fairly decent shots. I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m not even close to tapping the full power of my DSLR, but at this point I blame my lack of experience with post production, and my lack of a better lens. I really need to start messing around with depth of field more.

Anyhow, these are some of the shots I took yesterday. The full set is available for viewing over on flickr in full resolution glory. Enjoi.

While perusing (as opposed to skimming) my RSS feeds this morning, I came across a small, yet interesting post on Swiss Miss. The contents are as follows:

According to the Technorati 2008 State of the Blogosphere, of the 133 million blogs the site tracks only 7.4 million have been updated in the last 120 days. (For those that don’t feel like doing the math, that’s 125.6 million abandoned or at least unloved blogs.)

At first I thought to myself “well thank goodness that’s not me.” Then I remembered that I am the (proud?) owner of not one, not two, but four now defunct blogs, all of which I have not updated in well over a year or two. Granted, one of them was a precursor to this blog, but that’s no excuse for the other three. Not only am I a part of the statistic, I’m actually a repeat offender.

ON THE OTHER HAND. I am the owner/operator of three currently active blogs. And two of the blogs that I have which are inactive were deliberately abandoned, as they were the subjects of short writing projects which both came to an end, as intended. So, perhaps I’m not such a bad person.

However, this does provide me with motivation to avoid slacking off around here. Not that too many people read this in the first place, but I figure those that do would appreciate it if there was a reason to come back and check in. So, this is for you as much as it is for me. I <3 all of you, even the silent ones.

It has occurred to me that there are a great many people (and businesses) out there who claim that they are “Green” or “Sustainable,” and so they start recycling more or maybe reusing a coffee cup or biking to work/school/the brothel more often, and that’s about where it stops (particularly on the individual level). The problem with this, of course, is that changing one habit and hopefully sticking with it 80% of the time isn’t exactly “going green.” Granted, we all have to start somewhere, but if all you do is carpool to work one or two days and still drive in alone the rest, you’re not fully committing to it.

This is coming more from a place of exasperation than admonition; I happen to be predisposed to getting irritated by people who talk but don’t walk, so to speak. Also, I think I’m just tired of hearing people say they are “going green,” because really, most of them are not. I am all for saving the environment and prolonging the lifespan of the planet, but let’s not ease ourselves into a false sense of accomplishment over an absolutely minimal effort. It’s comparable to running the first 100 meters of a marathon and saying you finished it. Ya dig? This ain’t no relay, people.

Now, that being said, I still want to make a point of mentioning that “Green” or “Sustainable” practices are still far preferable to the whole “Organic” deal. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get yourself some healthy organic products; it does mean that given the choice between the two, you ought to opt for “sustainable” stuff, as it tends to pack many of the same healthy benefits to your own system, and it has a positive effect on the environment. Organic = selfish. Sustainable = communal.

Of course if you’re the type who doesn’t put any stock into this sort of leftist touchy-feely psychobabble, then feel free to suck down some more Big Macs while you tear ass down the interstate in your circa 1998 Humvee; you’ll be inadvertently solving another problem for us.

These are words that have lain dormant in my memory for over a decade now. Rather, this is a phrase, whose subject is interchangeable depending on what day you find yourself upon, that has occupied some dark recess of my mental vault, carefully biding its time and plotting its escape until such time as it deemed fit to return to my stream of consciousness.

These are the words of somebody who was a fairly influential figure in my life at the time I first heard them, and it was something I looked forward to hearing but seven times each Summer for roughly four years. This little ray of sunshine was the product of one Matt Kennedy (whose last name I am probably misspelling), a coach at the Vogelsinger Soccer Academy, which I attended for a week during the Summer between the ages of…I believe 10 and 13; twice at U of O, and twice at UCSB. Each morning of this grueling week, the entire group of anywhere between 200 and 400 attendees would gather for a morning routine dubbed humiliatingly (and appropriately) as “Soccerobics.” It is exactly what it sounds like, only magnified by ten.

Naturally we’d warm up and stretch before attacking the hour long session, intended to help strengthen our basic skills and muscle memory, and at the beginning of each of these sessions, Matt would look out at all of us, put on a gigantic shit eating grin, and say “Smile, Y’all, It’s xxday.” In the beginning of the week, this would illicit groans, but by the end of the week, laughter; there is comedy in both pain and repetition, and I believe Matt knew this. It would be foolish to assume Matt was any more thrilled about waking up early to go through this workout than we were, but he did a fine job of putting us through the ringer. And, you know, whupping our sorry butts into shape.

Needless to say, it is peculiar that this little gem decided to force its way into my contemporary reality, but I’m glad it did. I have as many fond memories of those times as I do painful ones (physically speaking), if not more, and I am glad to have seen it resurface. Plus, it seems the perfect tool to combat Tuesdays, which are invariably the cracked tubing in the Large Hadron Collider that is my week, so I may as well put it to good use.

I figure that since I’ve been talking about it but have yet to deliver, I’ll throw down some sneak peakage at the new layout I’m working on for this sucker. It’s still in early development, and the more I think about it, the more hesitant I am to leave the 3-column format which I have grown so attached to, so this will likely be modified in the final release, BUT, there is some good stuff waiting to come out of this. Still sticking with multiple time-sensitive themes, but the cycle is simplified, and it carries the CMYK theme across from my personal business cards and resume. Also there is space for a new online portfolio. OOOOOOOO.

Pictured at top is a selection of the chotchkies currently adorning my desk space. Believe it or not, they take up but a small portion of my area and they are lonely. These fools greet me in the mornings and mock me silently during the day; it’s essentially like having my own little troop of hecklers, but I trust they mean well. There is a story behind each of these items; most of them are short, but also entertaining.

I will close with a video I stumbled across this morning in my feeds, and regardless of your politics, you can at least admit that the motion work in this thing is excellent. If you’re a staunch Obama supporter like myself, then you’ll enjoy it thoroughly. Except for perhaps the white guy rapping…I think the message of the video is a bit muddied by his choice to include himself. Still, all around, it’s a swell piece.

I’ve been spending a great deal of time this past week aiding in the search for an illustrator for a project at ID. This is simultaneously awesome and awful. Awful because it’s a massive time suck and after hours and hours of staring at the computer screen for days on end and running into dead-ends for half the pieces that pique your interest, it can be a tad draining. Awesome because even though it does the aforementioned things, you get to see an amazing amount of cool shit, and you often branch off into tangential discoveries that make you giggle like that dumb kid in your fourth grade class who had no business being inside a school in the first place.

Well that’s the kind of giggling it makes me engage in. Quit pretending like you’ve no idea what I’m talking about.

Anyway, I made one such discovery just a moment ago in a post about some great concert posters. This in particular spoke to me and made me happy because, dammit, it’s clever as hell and it says so much:

I don’t know who made this, nor do I know anything about the band/group/artist it’s for, but I suspect both parties are probably brilliant in their own right.

There are a great deal of other gems for you to peruse in this article right here.

Generally speaking, I have grown very tired of Motion Type videos. Ever since MK12 released a video featuring a phone interview in the form of animated typography (which were executed masterfully, mind you), aspiring designers around the country let loose with their best attempts at mimicking the style/idea with varying degrees of success, but most of which fell short for a variety of reasons. I decided not to try my hand at it any time in the near future because I realized anything I do in that vein right now will suck.

Earlier this week, a video was posted up on Kotaku featuring the lyrics of Portal’s “Still Alive” treated in this format. Honestly, it wasn’t bad, but I found it to be somewhat inconsistent. Also some noticeable typos (your/you’re) detracted from my enjoyment of it, thanks to my tendency to analyze these animations to an extent almost anal retentive. I’d give it a “meh.”

Then, today, this was brought to my attention. I’m not a huge fan of Blink-182 (though the Dude Ranch album still brings back some 8th-grade nostalgia for me), but this video is not only very well executed, it does a great job of using visuals effects to subtly integrate with the frenetic pacing of the song and the presentation in general is just very nice. Kudos to Gerard Flores Torres for his very nice work on this piece.

Thanks are owed to Josiah for tipping me off on this one.

First order of business:
Apologies for the lack of updates this summer. I’ve been super busy, but I’ve also had little I’ve felt was actually worth writing about/that I felt I could get away with writing about. I’ll be remedying these things very soon. Promise.

Second order of business:
After only a few months of using this theme for the blog in its final state, I’ve grown very tired of it already. It feels flat, static, uninspired, and not entirely demonstrative of my skills as a designer. I was bored with it about a week after I finished it, and I’m only just now getting around to making a new one. I should have the mockup done soon, and will then be translating it over to a functioning theme immediately after. My goal is to have it live on the site by the end of the month, sooner if possible.

Features of the new layout include improved navigation, better integrated search functionality, less clutter, improved layout for the comments, and a more focused layout for the posts themselves. Sneak peeks if enough people ask for it.
